All jacked up, and the only place to go is down a hill...

First things first: Since crying in my last post about having to skip a day, I've felt awesome! It was the best thing I could've done for my running. Since then, any lingering soreness has mostly eased up.... right ankle is the main culprit of any problems right now, and that's at least manageable. Shins and my quad all feel much better.

Since Wednesday, I doubled up on Thursday, and through today I've rolled 82 miles in the last 7 days. With the exception of tonight’s debacle, all of my workouts have gone as planned - if not better than expected. A couple more days of running, then it's off to Colorado to pound on the slopes for 3 days.

Bringing my recent workouts up to date:

Week of 2/8-2/14:
2/8 – 7 easy.
2/9 – Monday Funday w/
Fleet Feet Tempo - 10mi total w/ 6mi tempo. Awesome run! Easily my best tempo run this training season. Started out at about 6:00, then progressed to 5:35. Avg low 6:40’s. Jason, Mark Wehrman, and Ricky Britton all joined in the fun. They dropped me after 5 mi though.
2/10 – 5 very easy.
2/11 – SKIPPED because I was a p*ssy (turns out it was the best decision of the last month)
2/12 - Double up: 10 mi on the treadmill - 1.5mi warm up, followed by 5x 1mi @ 5:30 pace w/ .5 mi easy recovery, 1.5mi cool down. Later in the evening, 5 mi easier (7:15-7:30 pace).
2/13 - 10 mi 7:15ish pace w/ Chris Woods. Austin Bound kids have left me us to go sling some guns in the land of Bush.
2/14 - 19 mi w/ Chris Woods and Mark Wehrman. My goal was to treat this run similar to Jason and my 19 last week. Go easy for the first 8 mi (7:15ish pace), progress towards 6:30 for 6 or 7, then cut back for the last 4 mi..... The 3 of us ran together through about 9 miles, then Mark helped me get to work.... 8 miles worth of progression towards 6:15 pace, most of which was sub 6:30... 3 miles cool down. Only 2 drinks of water/gatorade and 1 gu. 19 @ low-6:50's avg. Seriously, after a run like that, I'm toast! But, this was such an awesome sense of accomplishment that I was basically glowing for the rest of the day. Happy Valentine's Day, Mofo. I heart the ability to hammer a 19 miler on any given Saturday!
(This completed 66 mi for the week).

Week of 2/15-2/21:
2/15 - 8 easy. Austin Bound crew all put up some solid numbers in the full + half marathons today. Congrats guys! I’m looking forward to getting you back in a few weeks.
2/16 - Tempo from Fleet Feet w/ Mark W again, and a couple other local elite guys. 10mi total, 6 of tempo at 5:41 avg (5:53 progressed down to 5:35). Mark basically dragged me the last mile and then dropped me w/ .5 to go in some wind, but I felt strong the entire way. This went better than last week's 6 mi (almost the same pace, but seemed easier). I probably could've choked out another mile or gone slightly faster without too much trouble… another great confidence booster!
2/17 - 11 easy.

2/18 - Tonight. UGH! Just when I think I’m doing fine, I go and do something like this… 9 mi total after warm up/cool down.... w/ 7x 800's + 1:00 rest. Only one word could describe it - ridiculous. The goal would've actually been for 8x800, but the weather was terrible. High 20's if you can believe that’s not terrible, but the wind and sideways snow were a pisser. By the end, it was very bad footing and very poor visibility. I was trying to hit about 2:40's on the south repeats, when the wind was at my back (lots of sliding), but I eventually settled into 2:45's. Going north had an 8-10 second difference going south. Sad. I hate speed in this weather! I hate speed in the f*cking zoo parking lot. I need a track.

For the next couple days, I'll keep my mileage up through Friday. That’ll give me 61 mi for the week, as Saturday’s off due to my ski trip in Winter Park, Colorado. I'm really looking forward to it - in spite of having to quit running for a few days. Something tells me that 3 hard core skiing days at altitude are probably going to help the cause though. Hopefully I don't go and throw myself and the last couple months of training off a cliff though (literally).

Force Majeure

Force Majeure. Sometimes things are out of my hands... OK, maybe this hasn't out of my hands and I pushed some limits, but I had to step in to prevent the situation from getting worse. After taking only 1 day off in the last month, I had to take tonight off - and skip my speed workout (I know, that seems unthinkable!). BUT, the weather is garbage (rain and high winds), I'm being lazy (not wanting to hike uptown to the track), and some lingering soreness and a lack of sleep have all added up to needing to pull the plug.

I feel like I've been skating on thin ice the last couple weeks. I've had random aches and pains that come with bumping my mileage back up to 60+, but a lack of sleep lately has been exasperating these issues. After all the damn training I've done over the years, you'd think I would've learned by now... quality sleep is one of the most important parts of the recovery process. I've been getting by with 6-7 hours a night for the last couple weeks. That's no good. To cap it off, work continues to be stressful... as our economy is sitting on the brink of depression, and let's be honest... I haven't been the most healthy person lately... way too much alkihol and grease for a runner's diet.

SO, my internal powers that be have forced myself to take a step back. To most non-runners, this sounds pathetic. I mean, heaven forbid I don't run 1 day! But mentally, I'm struggling with it at the moment. The goal is simple though: prevent myself from creating problems that are beyond easier solutions. I'll reassess tomorrow.

66 bottles of beer on the wall...

I had a number of solid workouts this past week. 66 miles in total.

Unfortunately, I felt like I ruined it at the end of the week by drinking waaay too much over the weekend and not getting enough sleep (typical).

I started the week feeling some aches and pains. Mostly my left shin and my right hip adductors were extremely tight. A massage on Thursday helped to clear some of that up, but the hip/groin is still lingering right now.
In general, great runs though. And the weather FINALLY broke at the end of the week. I don't think I've seen anything north of 20 degrees in the past month. Saturday's long run was the first run in shorts since December.

Review of workouts:
S - 9mi "easy"... totally got out of hand though w/ 1/2 the run avg <6:45.
M - 5mi tempo, 9 mi total in some nasty wind - avg'd 5:45 for the tempo.
T - 9mi moderate on the treadmill - avg'd 6:35.
W - 7mi TRAAAACK!! Indoor track at Depaul - 8x600 @ :38's.
T - 4mi garbage on the treadmill.
F - 9mi easier.
S - 19mi Barrington... 9 @ 7:15-:30, 3 @ 6:45, 4 @ 6:15-:25, 3 @ 7:15.

Saturday's long run was key - 19 miles on the hills in Barrington with a pickup in the middle. I felt very strong the whole way, in spite of running 9mi the night before, then going out for Verdo's birthday and getting only like 6hrs of sleep.

This was my biggest week since before the Berlin Marathon in September. It's also my second week in a row in the mid-60's, and forth week mid-50's+. I've had a number of others in the mid-40's. I haven't taken a cut back week in a while... it's been more of a steady climb. My goal would be to press through the next week and a half, then pull back for my ski trip to Colorado. After that, mileage will likely bounce up and down to compensate for March Madness & Shamrock Shuffle.

Boston Marathon is a little over 10 weeks away.

Welcome to Coursing

While searching for a new and more effective means to document my training and progress as a runner and road racer, I have been inspired by the works of my fellow teammates, Dan McDowell and Jason Ream. Therefore, I have chosen to start a more formal runner’s log and post on this site.

The purpose of this weblog is to hold myself accountable for my weekly workouts and training regime. It is a training tool for learning about myself; a log to find out what works and doesn’t work, or what helps me and what breaks me. In the process, I hope to possibly gain some additional self-motivation for the pursuit of my goals – whatever they may be.

I intend to post information about running, maybe some random interests, and life in general. After all, one naturally feeds upon the other. Running is a great way to escape the daily grind; I have found it to be a very effective medicine for maintaining a sound mind, body, and soul.

Thus, the objective of this blog is to help further motive and inspire myself in order to get through the trials and tribulations of running, racing, and more importantly – life itself. For anyone following this weblog, I encourage feedback or comments. I cannot guarantee – nor am I overly concerned that this will be of any interest to anyone other than me, but I hope that some readers find it at least mildly entertaining and helpful for his or her own personal development.

SO....

******** WELCOME TO COURSING ********

Coursing is a game of chase; a hunt with the use of animals running after the prey, or a more formal and intense version of “cat and mouse”. Typically the hunt involves dogs (often greyhounds or lurchers), chasing their lure (often a rabbit, hare or fox). Bets are often wagered on the outcome.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of blood sports. Sure, it’s cool to watch these incredibly fast animals run, but I don’t enjoy seeing things get hurt or die. - Interestingly enough, the prey rarely get caught (stats show only a 1:7 chance). See
wiki for more information (because I know someone’s gonna say “prove it”).

The point being… In running and road racing we often have a rabbit, or a pace setter. Elites use offical pace setters to help them race. Other runners simply put a mental target on someone else’s back. The rabbit is someone being chased. The goal would be to stay with that rabbit for as long as possible and then try to pass him or her. Undoubtedly, the term “rabbit” comes from coursing.
In everyday life, this isn't too different from "Keeping up with the Joneses".

I AM THE RABBIT.
YOUR ARE MY LURCHER.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.
